Team 7 (New 52 series)

As you’ll recall if you at least watched my Flashpoint video, that story ended with Flash breaking across universes while looking for his original timeline. A mysterious lady narrated his travels for us, indicating that the main DC Universe would be united with what had, overtime, become a separate Vertigo universe. But more than that, it was also being united with the Wildstorm universe, as DC had acquired the comic studio and this was their chance to really do something with that.

With this New 52 reboot, though, DC decided not to start at the beginning. Instead they set the formation of the Justice League, the undeniable point where the world had to acknowledge the existence of superhumans, as being five years in the past. This was a big advantage for DC because it left room for them to keep certain parts of their history and toss out other parts as they saw fit.

But it was also a disadvantage for readers who might get lost trying to figure out what all was supposed to have happened in those intervening five years.

Some comics came out to help explain that. Largely this was in the form of the “0” issues, which for the most part jumped back in time those five years to give us an idea of how each of these characters got their start. There would also be some series that were set all or in part in the past, like the first few story arcs of Action Comics

Or this comic.

Even for Wildstorm fans, Team 7 might be obscure. Though they did get their own comic at one point, they were really just the backstory for the teenage superhero group Gen13. The fact that there’s no New 52 Gen13 comic should tell you how different a direction this series takes from the original. But this Team 7 does have one important thing in common with the original, and that’s that they’ll be used as background for superheroes of the present day. So if you want to jump back into the past with me to find out how this all began, then be sure to check out the video above!
